Hunting  the bats

Montepuez was a place with a good deal of little wild animals. Our roof was the home of a flock of bats. At sunset, me and my brother saw them in nose dive of the roof and passing by us in low flight. We thought... and decided that was easy shoot they down with a stick if we swung the stick up and down very quickly at the place of nose dive! And they here came! Wonderful that they always came one behind the other and so, was easy strike them! And we got some of them, held with our hands at risk of a bite!!

Matola

Matola was the big village near the capital of Mozambique where we lived next. The voyage was made by liner with cabins, swimming-pool, restaurant, and so on. In this city I met, the first time, a big friend of mine and his brother. He is called Vitor Caldeira and we were nine years old. I attended at fourth year of school. I think the first meetings with Caldeira were at the fourth year but I think possible at the road facing my home and playing with his bicycle.

Movie

In this city we had a novelty that we hadn’t at Montepuez. The movies. A thing that me and my brother never had seen before. We started to see movies regularly at the Sunday afternoons. We had an advantage because we were the sons of the one of the administrative authorities and the unique playhouse of the city (a very good playhouse indeed) gave us free ingress, without payment, and didn’t take notice of our age!!

Amália Rodrigues

I recall, then, that Amália Rodrigues had her palmy days and her songs were pretty and lovely. «A Casa da Mariquinhas» was on the top of Portuguese music, a very nice song. Getting out of school, going for a drive, at home, we always heard Amália.  She was an ubiquitous star!
